Artist Statement
These fish sculptures started out very small, as part of a project to create an underwater scene on my home kitchen cabinets. People liked them, and the fish grew into stand-alone wall art, and then on into the monstrosities I’ve created for this show.
As much as possible I’ve incorporated cast-off or second-use materials, such as salvage lumber, left-over tile, stained glass scrap, and thrift store finds.
While I’ve done a number of salmon sculptures, I decided to make this a salmon-free exhibit, and focus on fish species that don’t get the artistic attention they deserve, including Alaskan species like rockfish and greenling.
I’m a part-time artist and designer, working sporadically in illustration, wood-carving, painting, and digital design. I sometimes work with my wife Sonya Senkowsky on web and logo design projects through AlaskaWriter.com, and have done poster illustrations for the Alaska Natural History Museum, Alaska Flute Circle, and other organizations.
From 2004 through 2006, I participated in Anchorage’s “Wild Salmon on Parade” (http://www.wildsalmononparade.com) . My current projects include an illustrated music book for Native American flute.
For a day job, I work for the US Army Corps of Engineers as an environmental scientist. This job allows me to travel all around Alaska, counting ducks and stuffing mud into jars, and provides a great deal of inspiration for my artwork.
