Artist Statement
I believe life flows like a river and we, in our little life boats, drift around its winding blue curves, meander through sunlit flood plains, defy frothy rapids, and survive perilous waterfalls. We also needlessly race downstream, hopelessly struggle upstream, dive to great depths, hit bottom, drag bottom, float lazily in groups or drown alone.
In the end, we find there’s no escaping life’s journey. But we can face each day with dignity and grace. We can stand tall, play the hand (or instrument) we are given, and head Down to the River to embrace life on life’s terms. In these choices lie truth, beauty and blessings.
Each of these artworks is a glimpse of a memory from my life’s journey – loving relationships, births and deaths, family vacations, and the strange privilege of living in a city full of wildlife for thirty-eight years. I hope they bring joy and brighten winter days.
Linda Powell
Linda Powell can’t believe it’s been twenty years since she graduated from UAA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She believes that a good art education prepares you for success in many endeavors and that having a day job doesn’t prevent one from being an artist. She makes art featuring animals that are quirky and funny, and strives to make each piece beautiful in its own way. She’s fond of musical titles, and of saying “everything will turn out okay.” She exhibits regularly, and Snow City Café is a favorite venue.
Bonnie Bucknam
Bonnie Bucknam’s hand-dyed cottons were the basis and inspiration for these artworks. Bucknam is a fiber artist who formerly lived in Anchorage and now resides in Vancouver, Washington.
