Artist Statement
As a student at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, I am pursuing a double degree in Spanish and Fine Arts. Raised in a small, Christian community in Kenny Lake, Alaska, I found comfort as a child in the security of a limited life experience. Yet the rigorous academic standard of my school and my desire to learn inspired me to look beyond the safe borders of my community. As I am adapting to life as a secular adult, my desire to experience has only increased.
With every new experience however, life becomes messier. I try to mentally explain emotions and analyze actions to make sense of the disorder. However, some things just won’t stack: some things cannot be elucidated, some memories repeatedly resurface, and a basic infrastructure within myself persists. Yet the “things” and the people that refuse to be categorized neatly offer my life certain stability. My paintings often reflect my internal thoughts as I discover beauty in the “things that won’t stack.”
While, I have shown art in the Student Union Gallery and recently exhibited a few paintings at Middle Way Café, this is the first time I have ever had a solo show. I am very excited for this opportunity and look forward to becoming a part of the Anchorage art community.
