Artist Statement
I grew up in the wilderness of Western Montana and spent years exploring the Rocky Mountains. The rugged beauty of the Rockies was the prism through which I viewed the substance and colors of nature and from early age summoned brush to paper.
I majored in the Arts at Boise State and developed a style greatly influenced by Southwest Native society and the wonderful pallet of life in those communities. My early galleried pieces were meticulous works of nature and design, and I was comfortable in my medium until 1990, when I moved to Alaska and fell in love with the land, sea, culture and a wonderful man and his kids.
The grandeur of my new surroundings immediately challenged my form and style. I found life here so sensuous I could no longer paint “between the lines”. My new friend and mentor Jean Shadrach said, “What are you thinking!? Paint big! You were meant to paint big!” In dramatic transition my love for Alaska exploded into huge, colorful impressions that charm my inner-being, trample my canvas and emerge as free-spirited individual expressions.
Art is a dynamic process and I’m delighted by the influence of our incomparable texture of life in Alaska – texture that continually beckons the little girl running through life with flapping paper and tin of beautiful colors.
The pieces on display are signed, numbered, museum quality (archival ink on 100% cotton, acid free canvas) open-edition Giclee prints that are transferred from watercolor papier colle or yupo original paintings and sealed with ultra-violet protection. Each has an engaging story and personality that they are anxious to share. But be careful, they’re all looking to hook up in committed, long-term relationships.
