The loyalty of her customers also has given Fairbairn some of her most proud moments as a manager. She said that she realized the cafe was a success when it became a regular practice that customers had to wait sometimes an hour and a half for a table on the weekends. She said she wished customers didn’t have to wait that long, but in a way, she is also proud that people are committed to the place.
“You’re not going to wait that long for a place if you don’t enjoy it,” she said. “Having, at my place, a wait, was definitely, ‘Wow, now I’ve made it.’”

We changed the category from “best breakfast” to “best brunch” this year, but no matter. You like your Ship Creek Benedict, your Tofu Scramble, your Crabby Omelet, which is why you head to Snow City Cafe (4th Ave. and L St., 272-2489). They serve breakfast all day, brew Kaladi coffee, and have options for the vegetarian, meat lover and Egg Beater crowds. The cute little snowman logo with the spoon-and-fork arms alone is worth the trip.
